Trulove Marketing recently joined the Huntsville Madison County Chamber. For me as a business owner, this was a no brainer. Leaving behind decades of professional contacts in Georgia to start over here in Huntsville meant that I would be building my network from the ground up. I had also spent seven years as president of my hometown chamber of commerce. So not only do I believe in the mission of local chambers, I've seen firsthand the networking and business referrals that happen due to membership in a chamber of commerce.
Here are two of the biggest reasons small businesses are hesitant to join local business organizations:
1) they're unsure if they'll see a return on their investment
2) they don't have time to attend networking events
Below are my recommendations on how and why it can be beneficial for your small business to join your local chamber.
Will I see a return on my investment by joining a chamber of commerce?
First, you have to decide what is an adequate return. For my business, just one new client will more than cover the cost of my membership dues. I also know the relationships I am able to make through the chamber will pay in perpetuity. Maybe you have open positions that you are unable to staff. Most chambers offer job boards and newsletters to help promote your openings. If you find one solid employee through your involvement with a business organization, then your annual dues will likely pay for themselves too. Also, don't underestimate social proof. In today's climate of online scams and buyer uncertainty, simply having a visible presence online through your local chamber's business directory can speak volumes to skeptical consumers as they narrow down their search.
But what if I don't have time to attend networking events?
This is probably one of the top reasons I've heard from small business owners who were hesitant to join the chamber. Here's the thing - it's not just a networking organization. It's a resource. Pick up the phone, speak to their team and let them know what your goals are - not just in business, but as a member of their organization. Chamber employees have their pulse on the business community. They're in the know regarding economic and workforce development, legislature, tourism, small business, big business and everything in between. If they know what you need to achieve in order to make chamber membership make sense for your business, they're in a better position to help you. Not only that, there are several resources available to you without attending events, like: a business directory (be found and find others) e-newsletters, job boards, marketing opportunities and more.
Joining your local chamber of commerce is not just about networking; it’s about strategically positioning your business for success. In today’s competitive landscape, being part of a community-oriented business organization can unlock numerous opportunities that directly impact your bottom line. Whether you seek to expand your network, enhance your credibility, or unlock new opportunities, the chamber is a venue for making connections and driving success.
